Laser Treatment of Varices

Laser Treatment of Varices

Varices are more common in females than in males.  Veins function in oxygenation and transportation of blood into the heart to return to the circulatory system. Delivery of the blood in the legs is achieved by valves in the veins. Yet, functionality of these valves may be interrupted and impaired in some individuals, in which case the untransported blood accumulates in the vessels leading to varices.

Patients experiencing the problem of varices tend to get tired easily, suffer from symptoms complicating daily life such as pain and cramps. As the disease progresses, eczemas and ulcers may be observed on skin texture.

Contemporary medicine, research works and evolving technology present updated ways of diagnosis and treatment. One of these new approaches is the laser treatment of varices, which is a comfortable treatment option in vascular surgery.

Many patients seek medical help with complaints of pain and nighttime cramps. Physical examination and state-of-the art imaging modalities (Doppler ultrasonography) contribute to detection of the location and type of varices, and planning of treatment.

In treatment planning, location, type and rate of progression of the disease are examined to assess the best available treatment method. Varices that used to be treated by surgery for many years are recently being treated by non-surgical methods as an alternative to surgical treatment. One of these methods is laser treatment.

How Are Varices Treated With Laser?

Laser technology is being used in many aspects of life. In medicine, laser has recently become a frequently used treatment modality. Laser treatment of varices is a quite convenient method in use since 1999. Laser is applied to the problematic vein according to the principle of cancelling the vein. Laser is applied inside the insufficient vein under local anesthesia with ultrasonographic guidance after a proper vein mapping. No incision is performed in this method. A laser fiber is placed inside the vein by using specially designed needles. In some cases, foam therapy may also be applied following cancellation of the vein.

Laser treatment of varices takes about 15 minutes per vein. Multiple veins may be treated in the same session. Laser treatment is both a current and preferred way of treatment for patients and doctors.

Advantages of Laser Treatment

Laser treatment of varices is quite a convenient method for the patient. The procedure does not cause any walking restrictions and the patients may return home on foot. Since the patients are given sedatives and painkillers following the procedure, they may be asked to take some rest after the session.

The risk of infection is minimal since the procedure does not require any incision or stitching. Symptoms are expected to resolve in time following removal of the non-functional vein from the body. It is important to strictly adhere to the doctor’s recommendations and to follow the necessary exercise program in the process of treatment.
